Digital Signage

As you all probably have heard, a new project will be going live in all Rotana properties effective September 2008. This is the Digital Signage project that contributes to one of our Rotana values which is the innovation.

This is a signage mechanism that is centrally managed and is of a digital nature. This software is built to accommodate many communication modes of information sharing i.e. audio, video, presentations, images, tickers or a combination of all. The software will be fed by some or all of these modes accompanied by a scheduler that will manage the traffic of the data i.e. what data will appear in what mode and at what time and for how long.

At Rotana, we will be the first to implement a global system where Corporate, Area and Property news can broadcast simultaneously to all our team members. The display screens will be located in the Employee Outlets of each property. This location ensures that the messages are seen by all. At large properties, more displays may be located at other employee zones.

The display screen will be divided into three parts and will have three levels of access to update

  1. Corporate level: This part of the display screen will be managed and updated by the
    Corporate Office access level.
  2. Area Level: This part of the display screen will be managed and updated by the Area Office.
  3. Property level: This part of the display screen will be managed and updated by the
    Human Resource Department.

The system is divided into two components, one which is installed at the Corporate Office and the other at the Property. The requirements at the Corporate Office are a server to upload and update information and download to all the property display system. An internet Leased Line is also required to transfer information from the server to the properties Media player. In addition, a firewall and a router to restrict access to the Server to Rotana users only.
The requirements at the Property are a CAT6 network cabling connection to the Media player which will communicate and download information from the Server and of course the displays which are advised to be LCD 42”.

The Media Player that will be provided by the Corporate Office is a device used to download information from the server and is required for each display screen. The Media Player will be connected to the display screen via SVGAS cable which will be installed behind the screens. Licenses and cabling will be required to install this system at other areas such as the lobby, the meeting rooms or the lifts. The I.T managers should ensure these media players or controllers are mapped to a Public IP and Http: 8080 is open for communication between the Server and the media player.
